Linwood Named Tree City USA (4/16/2007)
Linwood has been named a Tree City USA community by The National Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to community forestry. It is the seventh year Linwood has received this national recognition.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.

Linwood has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance.

"Trees in our cities and towns help clean the air, conserve soil and water, moderate temperature and bring nature into our daily lives," said John Rosenow, president of the National Arbor Day Foundation. "Tree City USA designation recognizes the work of elected officials, staff and citizens who plant and care for the community forest."

"Trees are a vital component of the infrastructure in our cities and towns, and provide environmental and economical benefits," Arbor Day Foundation President Rosenow added. "A community, and its citizens, that recognize these benefits and provide needed care for its trees deserves recognition and thanks."

Linwood Provides Leadership on Environmental Effort (8/9/2006)
Linwood Mayor Richard L. DePamphilis, III, has become the first mayor in South Jersey to sign on to the United States Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement. The Agreement, launched by Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, was developed in order to advance the goals of the Kyoto Protocol by getting U.S. cities and towns to commit to putting policies and programs in place that will reduce global warming pollution.

A total of 275 mayors in 43 states have currently signed the United States Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement. Many municipalities in North Jersey have already signed the agreement including: Brick, Newark, Plainfield, Westfield, Bloomfield, Hope, and Robbinville.

Mayor DePamphilis agreed to sign the Agreement at the urging of the Linwood Environmental Commission, a group that is very active in promoting environmental awareness and sustainability in Linwood. It is hoped that other area mayors will follow Linwood’s lead.

The agreement obligates communities to take concrete steps to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Mayor DePamphilis noted, “This is not only the right thing to do from an environmental standpoint but each of the actions that we are taking will save the City money and enhance the quality of life in Linwood.”

The City has organized several programs and events in order to improve their local environment including a city-wide Adopt- A- Tree Campaign. Linwood has been designated as a Tree City and is currently working with local businesses, government and residents of Linwood to plant a variety of native trees throughout the City. The City has also enacted a stringent clearing ordinance.

The City is considering ways to expand its bikeway network to connect major commercial developments like the Cornerstone Commerce Center. The bikeway extends from Somers Point to Pleasantville. The City's work to expand transportation choices -- including improved bike and pedestrian opportunities -- will reduce the number one source of global warming pollution in our region: motor vehicle emissions.

A regional solar project is being planned to provide electric to City Hall, Mainland Regional High School, and Belhaven and Seaview Schools. This project will provide a model for how cities can take the lead to reduce energy cost for all public facilities without investing public dollars.

Linwood has also begun a very aggressive city-wide recycling campaign. In cooperation with the Atlantic County Utilities Authority, Mayor DePamphilis sent out a letter requiring recycling by all of Linwood’s residents and businesses. The Mayor also sent a letter describing the cost saving benefits of recycling materials such as cardboard and wood from construction sites to all Linwood contractors. The goal of increasing recycling rates will save the city in waste disposal costs and avoids thousands of tons of greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the need for materials and energy.
